August 4, 2022 – A College of Lake County student in Illinois reflects and celebrates winning the national SkillsUSA Collision Repair Technology competition in June.
According to the Daily Herald, Olivia Peterson went from a career as a librarian to attending auto collision repair courses in 2020.
At the national competition earlier this summer, Peterson and other students had to show off their skills in plastic and metal repair, welding, structural analysis, and a written test and mock-up. maintenance.
Peterson represented what has always been a small group of women who received medals in the collision repair technology competition.
“After two career changes, I found a job with a purpose, helping to promote women in the trades,” Peterson told the Daily Herald.
While enrolled at the College of Lake County, Peterson interned with Gerber Collision and Glass in Crystal Lake, Illinois. They offered her a job before she graduated and she is currently working there.
Peterson was one of three College of Lake County students to compete nationally for SkillsUSA. Peterson enjoyed the competition and met all the other students from across the country.
“My name is out there now,” she said. “At the same time, it gave me the opportunity to assess my skills. The competition tested typical things that I do on a daily basis in my field,” Peterson told the Daily Herald.
